Ticket to Antarctica (Sixth Class)

7th Nov 2025

Ms. Jameson’s 6th Class are following the British Antarctic Survey as they carry out field research in Antarctica.

We have been following the journey of the British Antarctic Survey. They have travelled by plane from Calgary Canada to Rothera Research Station in Antarctica. They have travelled there to research life in Antarctica. We asked them questions, and they have responded with videos and virtual postcards. We are very lucky to have this opportunity as they do not respond to everyone.

The questions we asked were:

  1. How much fuel does the plane take?
  2. How many stops do you make?

We learned that they make 12 stops on their journey, and watch the video attached to hear about how much fuel they need - skip to 3m18s in the video. We were so excited that they answered our question!

Here are some facts that we have learned about Antarctica:

  • Antarctica is a massive snowy desert.
  • There are lakes under the ice.
  • The team flew 8,000 miles on their journey.
  • Less that 1% of the continent is free from ice.
  • The water can get as cold as minus 1.8 degrees Celsius!

We are delighted that we are able to follow the team’s journey to Antarctica. We wish them all the best as they continue their research.
