History of the School
On 20th June 1870 the people of Wicklow watched in amazement as four horse-drawn carriages arrived in Wicklow Town. In the carriages were eight Dominican nuns who had been invited to set up a school in town and so Holy Rosary School was born!
As the town grew so did the schools within the Dominican Campus. On 12th January 1950 the current Holy Rosary School Building was officially opened to cater for the growing school population. As the school continued to grow a second building was needed and in December 1977 Bethlehem Building was opened.
There have been many great events in our school over the years, but 2011 marked a significant change when the school moved to become a co-educational school. In that year 14 boys enrolled in Junior Infants and in the years since the school has evolved to become fully co-educational and cater for boys and girls right up to 6th class.
2012 was also a significant year as the first class for children with autism opened in Holy Rosary School. This has been a positive development in our school: it has strengthened our commitment to inclusion and our celebration of each individual chil in our school. As recently as 2020 we have further developed this area of our school to include an Early Intervention Class for children with autism. Children as young as three years of age are now part of our school community.
Holy Rosary School has a colourful and exciting history which we continue to remember and celebrate. But we are not done yet: our school continues to grow and develop to ensure the highest quality school experience possible for our pupils. The dedicated work of our staff and pupils today is writing the next chapter in the history of our wonderful school.
